Articulated Paint
ARTICULATED PAINT is the concept and prototype of a innovative musical interface that utilizes the close relationship between gestural expression in the act of painting and that of playing a musical instrument. The audio-visual installation enables non- and beginning musicians to instantly experience basic aspects of musical expression by eliminating the need to learn how to play the right notes.
A physical brush on a canvas acts as the instrument. The characteristics of its stroke are intuitively mapped to a conductor program, defining expressive parameters of the tone in real-time. Two different interaction modes highlight the importance of bodily expression in making music as well as the value of a metaphorical visual representation.
The physical form of the interface (brush on canvas) is chosen deliberately. A result of different musician and user studies was a close relationship between gestural expression in the act of painting and that of playing a musical instrument.
ARTICULATED PAINT was accepted at the NIME (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) conference → (New York, 2007) and was part of the exhibit at the Ars Electronica Campus 2.0 → (Linz, 2007) where it won the Campus Award.
